AMES, Iowa – The Vet Med Trail, a shared-use path from South Fourth Street to the ISU Research Park, will close on Monday, March 31, weather permitting, for one week. The closure is necessary to construct a new electric vault in preparation for the widening of South 16th Street, which is scheduled to begin construction this summer.
The new electric vault will be located on the south side of South 16th Street, directly adjacent to the trail. Southbound trail users should detour at South Fourth Street to University Boulevard to Airport Road. Trail users at the ISU Research Park heading north would take Airport Road to University Boulevard to South Fourth Street.
Construction on the South 16th Street widening is anticipated to begin this summer, and the Vet Med Trail will again close with the same detour recommended. The project is expected to be complete by fall. The east phase of the South 16th Street widening will begin in 2026 but will not impact the shared-use trail.
